ICYMI: Adkins Doubles Down on Her Extreme Position, Rep. Sharice Davids Stands Up for Choice

Since the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, Rep. Sharice Davids has stood firmly as an advocate for a person’s right to choose. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Star revealed today that Republican candidate Amanda Adkins has a record of pushing for complete bans on abortion, without exception for rape or incest.

The Kansas City Star reports that Adkins supports the constitutional amendment that would allow the Kansas Legislature to ban access to reproductive health care, and that her troubling position isn’t new: Adkins reportedly pushed for a “Human Life Amendment” that could “go as far as preventing states from legalizing abortion” while chair of the Kansas Republican Party, and she served as Sam Brownback’s campaign manager while he campaigned “as a staunch religious conservative and was one of the leading opponents of abortion.”

On the other hand, the Star reports that Davids “has come out strongly against the constitutional amendment.” Davids also discussed the Dobbs ruling on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, detailing how Kansans are fighting hard to remain the Free State, saying: “We’re doing everything we can to beat back this constitutional amendment that would create a highway to extreme bans… It’s not okay to take away our rights or for politicians to insert themselves into our health care decisions.”

“In Kansas Thursday, Davids told reporters the choice was black and white.

‘I think that people have a clear choice between someone who believes that people should be able to make their own medical decisions and have the right to access the full range of reproductive health services and someone who has supported some of the most extreme bans on, not just accessing abortion, but accessing that full range of reproductive services,’ Davids said.

Still, abortion rights may take on a new significance to voters. ‘I think voters understand and are galvanized by this decision, because it’s no longer in the abstract,’ said Danni Wang, a spokeswoman for EMILY’S List, an organization which works to elect women who support abortion rights. ‘They want to do whatever they can to elect leaders that represent their values.’”

Sharice Davids’ Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

Rep. Sharice Davids released the following statement after the Supreme Court issued its ruling overturning Roe v. Wade:

“This is no longer hyperbole or hypothetical. For 50 years, we’ve been protected from the most extreme attempts to control people’s decisions about their bodies, but that protection is now gone and Kansas is at a major decision point.

Will we stand by as Kansas joins a wave of states with extreme, no-exception bans? Or will we make it known that in Kansas, we support women and access to health care–and we believe politicians have no right to take away a person’s right to choose?

I urge folks to consider carefully what’s at stake. I will always work to protect Kansans’ rights to choose—starting by voting no on the amendment seeking to strip existing protections from our state constitution in August.”

ICYMI: Kansas Reflector: “Davids renews call for suspension of federal gas tax; Adkins rejects idea”

Yesterday, the Kansas Reflector reported on Sharice for Congress’ first ad of the 2022 cycle, a drive-time radio ad that “points to the gasoline tax policy gap between Davids and Adkins.”

The ad highlights Rep. Sharice Davids’ work to get Kansans immediate relief at the gas pump—meanwhile, Amanda Adkins “denounced the idea” of giving a common-sense tax break to Kansas families.

Read more in the Kansas Reflector:

“TOPEKA — Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids and Republican congressional candidate Amanda Adkins disagree about proposals before Congress to temporarily suspend the federal tax on gasoline for the remainder of the year due to surges in fuel prices at the pump.

Davids, the 3rd District representative seeking re-election, said the 18-cent-per-gallon tax should be suspended through legislation that would shield the highway trust fund from a decline in revenue. The proposal emerged as consumers dealt with sticker shock worsened by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Here at home, folks are already feeling the effects of this uncertainty, mainly in the form of rising prices at the gas pump,” Davids said. “This comes as hard-working Kansans are also dealing with increased prices on groceries and medicine, further squeezing what was already a tight budget for many families.”

Adkins, who is seeking the GOP nomination in the 3rd District after losing to Davids in 2020, denounced the idea with posts to social media.
